Florida Keys, FL
A residence and studios for an artist and architect in the Florida Keys (Key Largo). Envisioned as a compound for play and work, intimately connected to south Florida’s compelling climate and surroundings.
The main structural system consists of white concrete post-tensioned slabs, acting as floors, walls and roof. The harsh Florida sun is moderated by use of folded steel plates, acting as sun shades and sculpture.
The ground plane is only one place to gather, with direct connection to the surrounding waterways. Additional terraces are interspersed throughout the residence, accessed from multiple locations. This allows for intimate gatherings, or large groups.
Though not a new idea, the concept of stilts is used here to elevate the residence from the inevitable storm surge associated with ever-present hurricanes. The post-tensioned walls hit the ground in few, but key locations, so wave action is less detrimental to the structure during a storm, and with a little luck the residence itself is habitable after the storms passing.

Sonoma County, Ca.
Set in serene West Sonoma County, in the Russian River regions this second dwelling unit will expand the family compound for long-time friends. Designed as a space for family members to stay for extended periods of time, or as a space to rent for vacationers, the Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is approximately 640 square feet, laid out for ease of use and simple flexibility of space.
It sits on a previously graded pad, between steep uphill and downhill slopes. Views from the new deck filter through mature Douglas fir, Redwood and ever fragrant California Bay to distant views of vineyards. The concept was to keep all walls (except those needed for restroom privacy) detached from the roof, so that the ceiling of the space was continuous, making the modest space seem larger, and allowing light to pass through all the rooms.

Building Information
Client: Withheld
Size: 1,300 sf
This project replaces a dilapidated building, providing up-to-date facilities for the hard working staff running a busy winery in Napa County. Employees need a safe, quiet place to separate themselves from the sometimes loud, chaotic wine-making process. Employees can gather, eat, relax and shower after shifts.
It is also a hub of outdoor gathering for events and the occasional game of horseshoes.
